Natural quasicrystal with decagonal symmetry
We report the first occurrence of a natural quasicrystal with decagonal symmetry. The quasicrystal, with composition Al71Ni24Fe5, was discovered in the Khatyrka meteorite, a recently described CV3 carbonaceous chondrite. Icosahedrite, Al63Cu24Fe13, the first natural quasicrystal to be identified, was found in the same meteorite. The new quasicrystal was found associated with steinhardtite (Al38...
متن کاملTwo-Dimensional Symmetry Mutation
Although the crystallographic notation for two-dimensional Eu-clidean and spherical symmetry groups is widely used, Conway's orbifold notation is both simpler and more transparent, and provides a uniied naming scheme for symmetry groups of all three two-dimensional geometries. Based on it, this paper dicusses the concept of symmetry mutation, an operation that maps a two-dimensional symmetry gr...
متن کاملInterface-driven formation of a two-dimensional dodecagonal fullerene quasicrystal
Since their discovery, quasicrystals have attracted continuous research interest due to their unique structural and physical properties. Recently, it was demonstrated that dodecagonal quasicrystals could be used as bandgap materials in next-generation photonic devices. However, a full understanding of the formation mechanism of quasicrystals is necessary to control their physical properties. He...
متن کاملMoment isotropy and discrete rotational symmetry of two-dimensional lattice vectors.
We present a direct proof of a theorem linking the order of moment isotropy and degree of discrete rotational symmetry for a two-dimensional set of lattice vectors. This theorem has been proved previously based on properties of sinusoidal functions. The new proof is based instead on purely linear algebraic arguments.
متن کاملSymmetry Structure of the Elser-sloane Quasicrystal
T . This can now be used to find all patterns in LI(P) with special symmetries (relative to the origin) which is a standard procedure in crystallography. For repetitive, but non-crystallographic P , however, the LI-class has a much richer structure and contains uncountably many (20) translation classes. It is thus much more difficult to classify the complete symmetry structure of such classes, ...
